This fabulous beehive bowl recently was acquired from a private Long Island, NY collection. The form is wonderful, turned and hand hewn out of a single block of American Chestnut wood. Circa late 17th. to very early 18th. century. Most likely Connecticut, circa 1680-1720. The form of the bowl is awesome having a pronounced tapered thin wall and a hand hewn bottom base. It also has an early, over-sized top rim with an added top moulding. The paint is in the best old 18th. century Green over the original Pewter Gray. Bowls of this form and age usually come with side cracks and breaks due to the thin sides, this piece does not. The only loss is a couple of old check or shrinkage lines on the bery bottom of the bowl. They are tight and don’t affect the integrity of the bowl at all. The bowl measures 14 1/4 x 13 1/2 out of round and stands 4 1/4 inches tall. Price: sold
