A wonderful mid 19th. century sampler, circa1840’s-1850. The central figure is of a girl, Sarah Butler. She designed the sampler and this is her self portrait. Of note is her BLUE nose (bluenose). Sarah’s father was a judge in Butler, Ohio. This lovely girls hairstyle is pulled over her ears, she is wearing a multi colored snood. The Dress is full in the back, full sleeves and off shoulder. Could be a hoop skirt. At the top of the sampler are 2 sets of Capital letter alphabets, and one lower case alphabet. To the right of the lower case are the initials, SB. The S on the sampler is backwards. These initials belong to Sarah Butler from Butler, Ohio. Details on the sampler include 2 lions-4 smaller urns with flowers-House with 2 chimneys, larger building, possibly a courthouse-4 birds, possibly 2 red wing black birds, and 2 cardinals and then there are 2 large urns at the bottom of the sampler, flowers look like daisies. There are many other whimsical designs, butterflies and what looks like a LeMoyne star, seen as light blue on the left side. The LeMoyne star is an Ohio quilt pattern. You will see it, right behind the girls dress. The colors on the alphabet are faded, and there are some slightly discolored areas on the linen background. The red border is missing in some areas. The artist has taken elements from her world and recreated it in her work. I believe the frame to be the original Ogee frame. Overall size Frame- 32 3/4” tall x 31 3/4” wide and the Sight size is 26” tall x 24 3/4” wide Price: sold
