This certainly is a very unusual sand timer. I researched it and did not find many examples for comparison. While reproductions are made this sand timer is from the late 17th/early 18th. century. If I understand what I read, it appears the design has more to do with the artistic nature of the piece than any special functionality and seems to be connected with a lot of nautical history. This Three Bulbs Hourglass from the late 17th to early 18th Century is a very special, rare, rather unique piece. It comprises three glass bulbs connected vertically by a narrow neck that allows a regulated flow of sand from the upper bulbs to the lower ones. A fine example of a late 17th to early 18th Century three-bulbs Tin cased hour sand-glass with one large and two interconnected smaller bulbs bound at the stem with waxed cord, the frame of the upper and lower protective covers is made of Tin and has soldered Tin pillars. Please note that the base of the hourglass still has the layers of round paper, which I believe are original, to cushion the glass. This is quite a special piece and it is handed down with exceptional provenance. The sand timer measures 7 1/4 inches tall and the diameter of the base measures 2 1/2 inches.
