Most unusual wall box having original, very dry, red paint. While there is no provenance with this box, it is attributed to the Shaker, South Family from Shaker Road, New Lebanon, Columbia County, NY. This wonderful wall box was found in upstate NY as well. Research indicates “The South Family became the official gathering order for those setting out to become Shakers. The ministry finally appointed official elders for the South Family, making it truly autonomous in 1822.” Many skilled crafted items e.g. Shaker Chairs, cast iron stoves, textiles etc. came from the South family.
Across the front of the box is the word “SOUTH” in black stenciled paint. This box was found in the Albany, NY area, an area rich in Shaker history. The box has canted sides with superb craftsmanship. The wall box measures 11 x 6 1/2 top and 4 inch bottom wide x 8 1/2 inches tall. There is a small piece of wood missing from the back top so only half of the original hanging hole is left. The current hanging hole is well worn and has been in use for a long time. Construction is with finely cut dovetails and square cut nails. There are 2 missing dovetails on the back right side. Later 19th. century nails were added to the sides. Price: sold
