A 19th c. Hand Carved Remembrance. A hand carved plaque, with a very strong, highly graphic, weeping willow design. With it’s singular focus willow tree, the maker created an emotional image. A description done on a very early typewriter, pasted on the rear suggests that the piece derives from a tombstone found on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The weeping willow was commonly associated with mourning in 18th century American decorative arts and is often found in folk art paintings, frakturs, and occasionally on furniture and blanket chests. A hanging wire on the rear suggest the piece hung on a wall as a reminder of special sentiments for family. The overall size measures 12″ h. by 10″ w., the plaque is distinctive with so much sentiment. Purchased from a New England family collection. Price: sold
