Make do lights are always extremely interesting in function and design. Often they were made for a particular use or designed for a particular place in the early American home. This light is exactly of that sort. The light is American. The base a shoe foot/Trestle foot with a hand carved shaft. The light dates to the last part of the 17th. century to very early 18th. century and is made of Eastern American Pine. The surface is original. The proportions of this light are just great. The light has a single candle cup holding a tin candle holder with a crimped cup onto the top. A great piece to add to your collection of Americana and it would work either standing on a table or on the floor as it measures about 25 inches tall and 18 inches across the base. The light is American, New England, Circa 1690-1720. The base may well have been a candle dryer converted to a make do light when candles became easier to purchase than make. A truly excellent piece of American lighting. Price: sold
