17th. century, Lift Top Bible/Storage Box
A very nice example of a 17th. century, primitive, lift top Bible or Storage Box that still retains much of its original paint decorated surface. The lovely box has an unusual double bird escutcheon and wrought iron lock. Continental, circa 1640 – 1680, made of a European softwood. The box has hand cut dovetails and the best old Rose Head nail construction throughout. The surface paint does show wear but with comes a beautiful patina from years of handling. Boxes of this nature were found in every home during this period, unfortunately not many have survived. Nearly 400 years of use the box presents itself quite nicely. The right side batten on the top is a 19th. century replacement as are the present iron hinges. The rear 1 1/2″ of the top was split when the hinges broke and was reset. Fully functioning, the box measures 13 1/2 ” wide, 8 inches deep and 7 1/2 inches tall. Price: $650.00 + shipping
