A wonderful example of an early 19th. century floor light. This great piece is quite unusual in form and function. The light retains most of its original surface and is American and made of Native Cherry wood. The light has a round turned bottom disc base with three turned pegged feet, notice one has some loss. The shaft of the light is a ball on ball turning with a wonderful turned finial top. The candle holder itself is a book shaped device with a thru hole from the top to the bottom with a clean out and a holding hole. You would insert a nail into the small holding hole to keep the candle from falling thru and you would also use the bottom hole to lift the candle stub out of the holder. The book shaped candle holder itself has a carved date of 1815 on the one side and on the other side is a carved bee hive design with flowers. On the spine of the book are the initials “JA CL”. I feel this piece was most likely crafted by hand as a wedding gift and the initials are those of the bride and groom. The symbol of the bee hive was a Pennsylvania German symbol of hard work and industry and the added flowers symbolized a wish to “grow and produce”. This light retains its old original red stain (worn) surface and color. The condition is excellent the only restoration is the replacement of one of the feet, it was replaced in the early 19th. century. The light measures 28″ tall with a 10″ base exhibiting shrinkage.
