Wooden Table tinders are not often found. Most likely they were tossed into the fireplace and discarded as the lighting evolution went from candle, fat to kerosene. I love these wooden forms. This particular tinder is a Table tinder, double sided tinder box, the paint is original milk base in red paint. The box is carved out of one piece of wood including decorative handle, Often the tampers are missing but this one has its original carved tamper, striker, tow, and flint. The tinder box measures 8 3/4” x 4 1/8” wide x 2 3/4” tall, American, c.1750-1780, out of a MA collection. This tinder has two compartments. One side is used for storage and the other side, with the tamper, is used to start the little flame from which the candles were lit. This tinder has considerable charring from sparking. Price: sold

I update my merchandise on a regular basis but my big updates are around the end of every month. At that time I send out a slideshow featuring all of my new items. People on my email release get first peek at all the new monthly items before my ad comes out in the Maine Antique Digest. Most of the inventory I carry is 19th., 18th., and some 17th. century country primitives in original surface. I am an artist and I feature some of my original works on the site as well.
