Spill Holders are quite unusual to find these days. It is understandable as matches and other lighting devices advanced the old method of using a piece of splint or spill to carry light to the candle stick. Spill holders were mostly a product of the 18th. century. This wonderful example dates to about 1800 -1830. A spill is a twisted tube of paper or pine shaving and were used to transfer the flame from one lighting instrument to another, e.g. from the fire to candle. Special planes were made to simplify the production of wooden spills. Slivers of wood called splints were also used to transfer fire. So to hold these spills or splints beautifully crafted taller narrow boxes were made as containers for spill or splint. This lovely Spill/Rush holder has a scalloped/lollipop top and an unusual rounded front all in the best untouched surface. The entire piece is Native White Pine, New England. Spill holders were mostly hung on the wall or hearth so as to be handy when needed. This spill holder measures 9 1/2 inches tall. The form and surface are just wonderful. I believe I see tiny indentations from brads where the back of the spill is attached, difficult to see for sure. Price: sold
