I absolutely love this light, the form, age and provenance make it an outstanding addition to any early American homestead. This is a very uncommon form. American ratchet candle light. The light operates as the trammel style but this on is different in that it has a built in candle holder and a larger extended size. The light can adjust from it shortest of 39 inches to its longest of 72 inches. The extended foot measures about 5 1/2 inches and housed a candle cup that is removable. Early American charm at its best. Circa 1780-1840. This trammel candle light belonged to Smitty Axtell. Those who knew Smitty treasured him for his impeccable taste and wonderful personage. Smitty had this light as part of his private collection. Please notice that the trammel is tied with strings to hold it in place. It obviously, at some point, had the wire strap where the string is currently held. Obviously a make do repair that Smitty never sought to change and neither do I. The string could be replaced but there is something about the authenticity of the repair and that is was ok with Smitty, makes it ok with me. I hope you feel the same way. These lovely early pieces that have seen so much life grow on you despite their imperfections. Often it is the imperfection that add character and charm. Quite an unusual example of an American Trammel Light. Price: sold
