Quite a stately piece of American workmanship. Quite a large, stylized, painted spoon rack with a lift lidded compartment. This lovely piece has it original milk paint of Spanish Brown over Red and then decorated with Red dots and swirls. The construction is with square nails and the hinges are original iron hinges. There are three shrinkage cracks, one is very tight and the other two you can see a slight separation, see photos. Recently acquired from a Maine private collection. Circa 1790-1820. excellent overall condition. Two racks for spoons and a lidded canted compartment at the base. The wall box has the best, large lollipop backboard and the sides have finely cut winged sides, two on each side. The wall box measures 23 1/2 x 12 1/2 x 7 inches. Spoons not included.
