This small staved bucket with its original or very early rope handle has a very nautical appearance. The original painted surface is blue that has now oxidized to a dark greenish color. The pail never had a bale handle judging from the wear marks. Construction is with Lapped and Tucked Bands. The Pine bucket is 8 1/2 inches tall and 7 1/2 inches top diameter and 9 inches bottom diameter. The condition is good but there is a 2 1/2 inch piece missing from the bottom edge, see photo. This type of wear would certainly be expected from such a utilitarian piece. The bucket is very light in weight and date to the latter part of the 18th c. to early 19th. century, New England.
