I think this piece is just a phenomenal, truly country primitive example of a porcupine candle hanger. As we know, the porcupine form of candle dryer/hanger is a wooden backboard and the spikes/porcupines coming out of the backboard in the form of long wooden spikes/pegs. This piece was fashioned after the more sophisticated form. The backboard is wooden but the spikes/hangers are very long square nails. Most likely made “in the style of” by a less advantaged family. The backboard has its original Salmon painted surface. It is truly functional and a fine piece of American Folk Art. It is the reason we love our country/primitives so much. The porcupine board measures 11 1/4 x 13 inches. Definitely a fine piece of American history from the early to mid 19th. century. You can search long and hard before you find another example.
