This is absolutely the most unusual example of American Lighting and Craftsmanship. The entire candlestick is made of wood including the push up shaft. The base is quite large measuring 7 inches in diameter and has some fine turnings as it starts going up the stem of the candle stick and is topped off by a beautifully cup shaped tulip. the candle holder is also shaped and sits on the adjustable push up post just above the tulip cup. Both the candle holder and cup have wear as a result of use, age and burning. Notice how the candle socket is quite charred and there is also heat evidence on the underside of the cup shaped wax vessel. The entire piece is still very solid and usable. There is one repair and that can be found where the thumb tab is located. In one of the photos you will see an arrow pointing into the channel. In there you can see a hole, the original thumb tab was in that position at one time. During the life of the light the thumb tab broke off and someone moved it up about an inch to its new position. The height of the candle stick is 16 1/4 inches and when the shaft is fully extended it measures 21 inches. This is certainly a one of a kind candle stick made by an American craftsman. The surface is completely original and has aged beautifully. Circa early 19th. century. Price: sold
