A most unusual, early 18th. century carved cutting board. The board is made of American Maple, circa 1720-1740 and is probably out of Massachusetts. The surface is completely original and has a wonderful dash style carved decorated outer thumb molder edge and a crossed X “Salem Cross” style carved decorated inner border with a “rolling vine” decoration within. This crossed X pattern is found on early iron pieces, especially door latches from the Massachusetts Bay area. Over the years it was named, “The Salem Cross” and was thought to keep witches out of your home. The board is in its original surface and patina. The condition is very good. There is some very minor edge loss and the usual wear you would expect from a utilitarian item of this age. At some point the piece split and thin Pine battens were added to the backside to repair the board. The board measures 15 1/4 x 10 x 1 1/4 inches. Price: sold
