Outstanding, 18th. century American Wall Box–Splint/Spill/Pipe Hanging Wall Box
I can’t say enough about this lovely wall box. It is just outstanding. If you like 18th. century country primitive, this one will score a positive 10+. In it’s simplicity it says everything. The best form in construction and painted surface. The proportions add to the classic design. The overall size measures 21 1/2 inches. It measures 19 inches to the top of the well, 5 1/4 wide and 4 3/4 inches deep. The paint is exceptional, dry dark Spanish Brown. Rosehead and square nails. American, late 18th. to early 19th. century. The possibility of dual use arises when you look at this box,is it a pipe box or perhaps a wall box that was designed and used to hold wood splint, spill or fat wood pieces? Boxes of this type were used near the hearth to hold such items so as to have necessary wood or splint available to start a fire in a hearth or oven. It may have also have been used as a pipe box during its lifetime to hold the long tavern pipes. Interesting possibilities,I am leaning towards the original use being that of a Splint/Spill holder.
