Outstanding Large Serving Tray, Chestnut Wood
This is certainly an example that you will not often see. The size, age and condition of this serving tray make it stand out among all others. Quite a statement piece either on a good size country table or standing alone in a large cupboard or hearth mantle. This tray is made of Chestnut wood, before the Chestnut blight. Circa mid 19th. century or earlier. The quality of this tray is exemplified by the perfect shape and fine, thin cutting of the wood. Scribe marks are still visible on the bottom of the tray. These marks helped the maker define the proportions of the tray exactly. The surface is all original having its original thin coat of Brown paint. The bottom is carved with the makers initials. While the tray is flat the sides rise up just enough to give this piece body and elegance. The tray measures 31 x 19 1/2 x 3 inches rise. The condition is exceptional and so is the provenance.
