This wonderful light has come from a long standing Long Island Collection. It is late Pilgrim Period, late 17th or very early 18th. century, American. A wooden adjustable double candle holder originating from New England, most likely Massachusetts Bay Colony, Circa 1680-1720. The light has a hand hewn Red Oak base, a hand riven shaft and a carved double arm adjustable candle holder. The surface is grungy, old original surface and patina. The candle cups have old burn wear but they are still fully intact and strong. You usually see this form in a floor standing model, very few table examples have survived. This light would have been placed on the table and you would be able to adjust the height of the candles simply by adjusting the wedge. There is evidence of some old nail holes in the shaft that might have been used to help hold the candle arm in place (see photo). The surface is absolutely original, it was never painted and carries all the years of use proudly. No repairs, restorations or additions except the wedge might be a replacement. There is still some old and possibly original leather surrounding the center shaft where it enters the base. The candle stand measures 34 inches tall and the candle arm is 12 inches across and the block or slab base measures 9 1/2 x 8 x 2 1/4 inches. Price: sold
