A GREAT LATE 19TH CENTURY “10th. ANNIVERSARY” TIN OR TOLE WARE HANGING PIPE BOX WITH A WONDERFUL FOLK ART “BOW” ON THE FRONT . New England , Suffield, Ct. Circa 1860-1890 in old color and patina. For centuries it was customary to give “TIN” as a tenth wedding anniversary. In the mid to late 19th century local tinsmith’s would produce special wares just for that occasion. This piece is one of those special pieces. The tinsmith took a common hanging match or pipe box and embellished it with a Special “BOW” on the front as an artful measure of endearment. Husbands would purchase these pieces and give them to the wife for their anniversary. You can find more about “Anniversary Tin”, in “Tole and Tinware”, by Gould. The pipe box measures 13″ tall, 4″ wide and 2 1/2″ deep. Typical wear and tear associated with an item of this age. Minor surface rust visible but easily removable.
