This is quite an unusual piece, a small lantern style lighting device but I feel is was only meant to be used as a candle holder in a lantern style–perhaps so it could be hung. The reason I feel this way is because this light has no glass nor isinglass and has no evidence of any ever having been there. It is a nice early piece. Very early primitive pricket wooden light, Pine, never had glass panes, original very crusty and dry black paint. There is a Rosehead nail spike to be used as the pricket to hold the candle, 2 tiny nails in each leg into base and frame. The lantern measures 5 x 5 3/4 x 8” tall, Circa late 17th to early 18th century. I can see no issues with this lantern. I think some of the early nails in the side pieces are later additions as well as the wire handle. There are 2 very tiny nails in each of the legs, top and bottom, and a later square head tack beside them. It is pine and very light weight. I believe it dates to very early 18th or late 17th century. Price: sold
