Pilgrim era hearth warming stones are almost never found. I was fortunate enough to buy this one from a good dealer friend here in MI who had it in his collection for many years. This example is a sandstone and has a wonderful form with 3 carved integral feet. I am not sure what the shape is meant to represent. The top surface has worn quite deep into the sandstone from use over the past 350 years. The stone is 11 3/4” x 10 1/2” x 2”. It would have sat on the hearth next to burning coals to get hot. Cooked food in a pan would have been placed on the stone to keep the food warm at mealtime. Probably American and dating to the 17th or very early 18th c. There are a few shallow cracks around the edge and on top but none go deep or affect the integrity of the stone. Very rare. Price: sold
