A wonderful pair of signed and dated oil paintings. The technique is very much along Folk Art lines and sort of industrial. These are shipyard paintings, done in a great style. Signed and dated in the lower left corner, K. Siegert 39. I believe that the subject matter is European. The paintings were meant to be a pair and are being sold together. One of the Ships in the painting is the Hansa. Each measures 19 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches. Oil on old canvas boards.

The Hansa Line of Bremen was formed in 1881 to run services to the Baltic, Mediterranean and India. The Baltic service was soon abandoned as unprofitable, and the Mediterranean service reduced to Spain and Portugal. In 1890 the company started a service to the River Plate and later sailed to the US Gulf ports for the cotton trade. A service from North America to India via South Africa was formed in 1901 and in 1907 this was extended to the Dutch East Indies and Australia.
In the 1920s Hansa established a service from the US to the Persian Gulf ports, but the River Plate service was abandoned. Sailings between New York and South and East Africa were not resumed after World War II. Many of the company ships were fitted with heavy lifting gear for the carriage of locomotives, barges, tugs, transformers, etc. The company provided passenger accommodation on various routes, but no information is available on which ships provided this service. Price: $1200.00
