I certainly haven’t seen this form too often, actually only once before and it was identified as a Farriers Tool Box with Retractable candle arms. Certainly could be right. The base of the light is a divided box. Divided into four sections which could be used for nails and tools etc. Could also be used for sewing implements or just a catch all base for necessaries. While I am defining the history of the box I don’t want to overlook just how charming and functional it is as a table light. It could be used for so many different uses. Perfect for today’s electronic remotes, letters, desk accessories. The base is constructed with dovetails and square nails, divided into four and is Pine wood. The box base measures 11 x 11 x 4 inches. The candle light itself is delightful having two adjustable arms. Each arm extends to about 10 1/4 inches and then, of course, folds back if necessary. The candle cups are early wrapped design. The overall height of the light is 31 1/2 inches. Circe 1840 or so. Just an excellent example of early American lighting. Price: sold
